September 27th, 2013

This week, we enjoyed learning about the letter "Bb".  After discussing some of the things that start with the letter, both classes got a chance to play with bubbles.

We also filled our sensory bins with some fun "B" objects.  Ms. Suzie's class played in beans, buttons & bears.  My class played with bowls & beads.

Our pre-k students devoted time this week to practice writing the letter Bb.  The children took turns printing the letters in sand and in finger paint.

In Ms. Suzie's class, her students were able to apply bandages to their B's.

In my class, we first made a letter B-Bumble Bee and then letter b-buttons.

Our favorite book this week (this year, actually) was Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons.  This book was read multiple times in both classes and is so much fun.

While my class added buttons to their lower-case b's, Ms. Suzie's class created shirts inspired by Pete the Cat's.

Our oatmeal, cinnamon and apple sensory bin

This week, we celebrated apples and the letter, "A"!

In my class, we first practiced printing Aa's.  We drew them in sand, in fingerpaint, and then eventually with pens and pencils.  With children ages 3 and 4, I focus less on the ability to print a recognizable letter and more of an emphasis on letter recognition and fine motor development.  Of course, every student is unique and I carefully assess their individual abilities to meet each of their needs.

Meanwhile, in Ms. Suzie's 2 and 3-year-old class, they're also learning to recognize the letter A.  As more of a sensory process art, they had a great time applying apple stickers on their letters.

A is for alligator  and apple!

Back in my class, we created our A-Alligators and a-apples.

For a fun science/art project, students in both classes created apple stamps.  Dipping apple halves into paint, they were able to observe the shape and seed "star" that the apple half left behind on the paper.

Ms. Suzie's class is hard at work!

This week we also made homemade applesauce.  This is a great project that I do every year with my students.

We enjoy eating it, too!

September 13th, 2013

This week, we really focused on our five senses.  We had fun going through the trays filled with objects we could see, hear, smell, touch, and on one of the days, taste.

We also wrapped up our all-about-me theme.  In my class, we finished off with a personalized bulletin boards.  Each has a photograph, a drawn picture of their family, a hand-print, and a caricature.

And, in Ms. Suzie's class, each student created a water-colored portrait.

Ms. Suzie's students also worked on painted muffins after reading, "If You Give a Moose a Muffin".  Each child was then asked what would happen if they were given a muffin...

"If you give Millie a muffin...
she'll want all the pink ones!"

"If you give Henri a muffin...
he'll want a donut!"

"If you give Leonard a muffin...
he'll an orange muffin!"

Back in my class, we worked with noodles to make a collage.

We also used them to practice sorting and counting.

We finished the week off with our Fun Friday Pizza!  The children greatly looked forward to it and it did not disappoint!

What a wonderful first couple of days we've had in preschool this week!

Before school resumed on Tuesday, we made sure to get our new and improved classrooms ready!  Below is my new pre-kindergarten room.

And here, to the left, is Ms. Suzie's 2 & 3-year-old room!

On our first day, we got to enjoy the new playground equipment in the Shark Tank for the first time!

Then, in both classrooms, we busied ourselves by exploring and creating our first pieces of artwork...

...and taking our measurements.

Ms. Suzie also had each of her students create 1st Day handprint art.

Here are my hands with ten fingers in all,
my first mark in school to hang on the wall.
As the years go by, I'll remember and say,
"My hands and I had a great first day!"

Meanwhile, in my class, we painted portraits.

"This is the ocean.  The waves make it mixed up."

This week we played with play-dough...

...and dyed noodles.

We participated in our first P.E. class...

...we played with our train set.
