February 15th, 2019

This unit, we learned all about weather...

which Sacred Heart has certainly experienced a lot of lately!

We started the unit by first reading a book about clouds.

Then, using a mixture of shaving cream and glue, we painted our own clouds.

Afterwards, we dictated what our clouds look like and, thinking very carefully, we wrote down the sounds we heard.  This phonetic writing is a critical foundation skill of literacy and KP-2 students will practice it often for the remainder of the school year. 




We've been feeling the powerful hand of El NiƱo recently and we've experienced an incredible amount of rain.  No worries, however!  In KP-2, we love a rainy night.  We also love listening to Eddie Rabbitt's I Love a Rainy Night...

and we love listening to I Love a Rainy Night while making our own rainy nights.



To help us understand precipitation and the water cycle, we created rain in a jar.  With the ice on top mimicking a freezing atmosphere and warm water on the bottom mimicking the earth's warm temperatures, we witnessed water vapors forming droplets.


   
In between all of this weather learning, we explored the letter Pp...

and played with our Pioneer friends.

Later in the week, we learned about tornadoes.  These were quickly the students' favorite (especially once they were assured tornadoes don't generally form here in San Diego).




While learning about weather patterns, we were also introduced to weather forecasting.  Watching old Sacred Heart students who are now in 4th grade, we got to view a San Diego Union Tribune weather report filmed live at school in 2013.
I don't know how to put this, but I'm kind of a big deal.

Afterwards, we were introduced to Punxsutawney Phil, the best groundhog forecaster there is.

We watched live streamed video from Gobbler's Knob as Punxsutawney Phil revealed that he did not see his shadow.  Therefore, it would be an early spring.

We celebrated by painting our footprint...

and creating some footprint art (when we weren't jumping on the the bounce house during this extremely rainy day).


Soon, it was time to get serious.  We had our own forecasting research project to begin.



We worked hard all week and finally, on Friday, we invited parents to watch us give our presentations on a chosen weather pattern.






We rocked it!
